JAMES BRYAN ELDER, JR., PRIVATE FIRST CLASS, MIDLAND, MIDLAND COUNTY, TEXAS AWARDS AND DECORATIONS Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal BIOGRAPHY James was born in Midland, Texas and he was the son of Dorothy Genieve Gifford and James Bryan Elder, Sr. He was raised in Midland, his father was the Chevrolet dealer in Midland until 1963. He attended Midland schools, last attending Midland High School where he completed his junior year. The family relocated to Wheatridge, Colorado a Denver suburb after his father sold the dealership. He completed high school in Wheatridge in 1964. 
Home on Leave Before Departing for Vietnam He enlisted in the U.S. Army in the winter of 1965 and was trained in infantry. He was assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division and mobilized with the unit to Vietnam on July 28, 1966. He was killed in hostile action on December 29, 1966 perishing from gunshot wounds.
He was buried with full military honors in Denver, Colorado.
His son was born in March 1967 after James' death and lives in Denver, Colorado.
