JOSE RENTERIA DIAZ, SERGEANT, U.S. ARMY, BARSTOW, WARD COUNTY, TEXAS AWARDS AND DECORATIONS Combat Infantryman's Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal BIOGRAHY Jose "Tex" Diaz, born January 26, 1949 in Pecos, Texas. He was the oldest child born to Maria Luz Renteria and Juan Santos Diaz. He attended Barstow Elementary School, Barstow Junior High School and Barstow High School. He was active in football, basketball and boxing.

Basic Training-Fort Bliss, Texas His tour of duty began July, 1968, in Chu-Hai, Republic of Vietnam. He was assigned to the B Company. 3rd Battalion, 196th Light Infantry Brigade. The 196th was under the operational control of the 23rd Division known as the Americal Division. He was killed in action on April 12, 1969, from an exploding booby trap. He was buried with full military honors in his hometown of Barstow, Texas.
