ROBERT LOUIS SANDNER, CAPTAIN, AIR FORCE, BIG SPRING, HOWARD COUNTY, TEXAS AWARDS AND DECORATIONS: Air Force Pilot Wings, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters Air Force Commendation's Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal. BIOGRAPHY: Captain Sandner was born in Kentucky and his family moved to Clear Water, Florida where he attended high school. He graduated from Clear Water High School in 1954. After high school, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Lennehan. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, while she attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He entered the U.S. Air Force after his graduation in 1958. He completed Officer Candidate School at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. After commissioning, he completed flight training at Marianna Air Force Base in Florida, where his son Robert Junior was born. He then was assigned to Laredo Air Force Base in Texas for secondary flight training. He was then assigned as an instructor pilot at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring in 1960 and was among the first instructors for the T-38 newly assigned to Webb. Once Lt Sandner and his family arrived at Webb, they became very active in the community of Big Spring. His wife held several offices up to 1st Vice President of the Officer's Wive's Club at Webb. She was also active in a sorority in Big Spring. His wife's parents located to Big Spring and resided in the Setlle's Hotel. Captain Sandner and his wife bought a house in Big Spring. In 1965, by then Captain Sandner was sent to Hurlburt AFB in Florida for advanced close ground support flight instruction for the AE-1, Skyraider. This was a vintage World War II aircraft with dual prop engines. This aircraft was used in Vietnam for close ground support and for scouting. These pilots were know as "Sandy" 
Skyraider Training-Hurlburt AFB, Florida-1965 He began his tour in Vietnam on November 11, 1965. He was assigned to the 1st Air Commando Squadron, 1st ACW, 7th Air Force. His wife and son remained in Big Spring. He was flying in support of ground troops who operated in and around Pleiku. He was shot down and lost on June , 1966 over Cambodia. Very little is known about the incident. He was listed as MIA until his crash site was excavated in 1994 and remains were recovered in 1995 and identified in 1996. His remains were returned and buried in 1996 at Arlington National Cemetery. After Captain Sandner was killed his wife remained in Big Spring until 1970, when she left and remarried. She now lives in Florida.
